Junior Newsletter July 2022
Summer is most definitely upon us and with it comes a full junior programme with our junior competitions, NEW junior week as well as our away team matches.
Firstly, our junior girls certainly came out on top in the Ladies Club Championship at the weekend. Massive congratulations to Juliette Coffey with impressive and consistent scores to win the Ladies Club Championship. Talia Brewer retains the Jean Cross Cup for the second year running: a great achievement with excellent scores. Well done to both of them. They both work so hard with their golf so very well deserved.
Huge congratulations to our Suffolk Junior Team champions; Erin Woolnough, Talia Brewer and Bailee Taylor. It’s been a fantastic journey this year with some fabulous golf against very tough opposition on away courses, articulate speeches by our junior captain Erin and some wonderful camaraderie with our Felixstowe supporters. Wishing them all the best of luck at Woodhall Spa in August, where they’ll be representing Suffolk in the English Junior Champions Club tournament.
The Golf Sixes squad have played 3 out of 4 of their 8 fixtures with the squad of 12 consisting of many new juniors, new to golf, who have lessons on a Saturday with Sam. Some will be getting their first experience of playing on a course, exactly what Golf Sixes stands for. Well done to them all. Steve Frost’s organisation has been second to none – thanks Steve!
The next match in the WIFA Cup is at Purdis on 5th August. If the last match at Aldeburgh is anything to go by, the FFGC team will play some outstanding golf and it will be a treat to watch.
Junior Competitions
The junior committee is keen to encourage juniors to play in as many junior competitions as possible. We’ve decided to make all junior competitions free to enter. The winners of competitions on the Martello course will receive a £20 voucher for the Pro’s shop and second place will receive £10. The Kingsfleet winners will receive £10 vouchers and £5 for second place.
The prestigious junior trophies will be put on display in the Michael Hall memorial cabinet (under the television in the bar) and the winners will be celebrated at our presentation evening in the autumn.
So, all to play for by entering these competitions.

Junior Week
Junior Week kicks off with the Junior Open on 15th August. This has kindly been sponsored by MSC Shipping this year and Erin, Amanda and myself enjoyed choosing the prizes including golf bags for 1st place. Entry is £20 for non-members and £7.50 for members. Details are on posters situated around the clubhouse.
On Tuesday 16th August, FFGC will be hosting Golf Sixes on the Kingsfleet course and the Martello course will play host to the juniors taking on the seniors section.
Wednesday 17th August sees our first ever Junior Captain’s Day. Erin has been busy organising her day. A poster will follow advertising the details.
Then, Thursday 18th August sees our juniors taking on the ladies’ section.
The week concludes with the Junior Club Championship. This year sees the introduction of a nett prize in the main junior club championship. We feel this is a worthwhile addition as, although the junior champion is the best gross score and wins the prestigious shield, having a nett prize encourages more juniors to feel they have a chance of winning on the day. At the same time The MacPherson Trophy will be played for on the Kingsfleet course, this is a nett competition.
Looking forward to seeing many juniors out on the course over the summer holidays. Have fun and enjoy!
